When her grandmother Bea Holston passed away in 2007, Peyton H. Roberts and her sister discovered a trove of letters Bea had kept for more than fifty years. They were written by her husband, Bill, a US Navy Band trumpet player, during his sea duty aboard the USS Midway in the early years of their marriage. Too painful to read at the time, the letters were set aside until Roberts returned to them years later and was moved by the love that leapt off the page.
The result is My Dearest Bea, a collection of 1950s-era letters that offers a rare window into military and married life during the Cold and Korean Wars.
Join us over dessert for a conversation with Roberts about the letters, her grandparents' story and what it meant to bring their words back into the world.
